Super Teen - Kenneth Nyamusa Junior : Written By David Carruthers

Kenneth Nyamusa Junior doesn't fly or leap tall buildings in a single bound, but his spelling powers are out of this world. He is a Spelling B champion from London, Ontario and to top it off, he had his 1st book, "Survival of the Fittest" published at 14 years old.... W O W!!! Now, let's back track a little bit. I was beyond fortunate to meet this super teen and his amazing family at a Spelling Bee at Central High School in London, Ontario, several years back. The organizer of the event called me and asked if I'd be interested in speaking with the kids before they went on stage to compete for spelling glory. I was extremely excited and said 'yes' as I had never been to a Spelling B and had never spoken at one either. I then asked what their budget was for this event? There then was a brief pause on the phone before the organizer replied that their budget was zero, but they would have a stand for me to promote my books. I accepted and was incredibly excited to be going to my first ever Spelling B. You see, as a kid, I loved spelling in class and spelling all kinds of words. I couldn't wait to see all of the  brilliant spellers at the Spelling B and I was beyond curious to see how my spelling skills stacked up against these little word geniuses.

The big day finally arrived and I entered the school with great anticipation. I couldn't wait to speak to the kids and their families at the Spelling B competition. After setting up my books and chatting with several people about being an author, I went into the auditorium. You could feel the excitement in the air and the kids that were getting ready to spell had laser like focus written all over their tiny faces. As more people came into witness spelling greatness, I was getting more excited to present and I couldn't wait for the SPELLING to BEGIN. The judges then made their way to the front and were introduced to everyone in attendance. I was then welcomed and made my way to the stage. I was beyond honoured to present to this very gifted group of youngsters, one of which was Kenneth Nyamusa Junior. After I finished, the primary group of kids stood up. They were sooooo young, 6 to 8 years old, but when it came to spelling words, they were like seasoned veterans under the bright spotlight shining above them. I was literally blown away by their unbelievable spelling skills. Funny, when I was sitting in my seat listening to their young minds at work, I was quietly spelling the words to myself. I can honestly say that I passed this spelling test, but there were still a number of words in the youngest category that this middle-aged man had to think about. These 6 to 8 year olds did a fantastic job and were as cool as cucumbers under pressure that morning. I was beyond proud of each of them, just like all of the family and friends were in the high school auditorium that magical day.

Next came the juniors and this is where I was first introduced to super teen, Kenneth Nyamusa Junior. One by one these amazing 9 to 11 year olds were spelling words that I had never even heard of and some seemed longer than the alphabet. I was floored by their spelling skills, especially as they were still just young kids themselves. Kenneth Nyamusa Junior was then introduced as Junior from Orchard Park Public School. A big smile then came over my entire face as this was my old school from kindergarten to grade 8. In saying this, I was cheering for all the kids to do well that day, but I do have to admit that Junior was now my favourite speller of the Spelling Bee. Every time he was given a word, I knew he could spell it, but I felt the pressure for him. As the time went by, Junior and the other kids kept spelling the words correctly. I was speechless by their phenomenal spelling and this time, I must admit, I actually got a number of words wrong. Junior and his fellow spelling competitors did a wonderful job beneath the live microscope they were all under. Funny, some of the words they spelled I had never heard of before in all my years on this planet. I just wondered, what kind of words the oldest kids would have to spell later in the afternoon? Unfortunately, I couldn't stay the entire time, but I was thankful to not only see my 1st in person Spelling B and watch young spelling magicians work their magic, I met Kenneth Nyamusa Junior. I was beyond fortunate to be a part of a day that was a priceless experience for me, one that I will always treasure. If you've never been to a live Spelling B before, I highly recommend you bring the entire family. Sit back and get ready to be amazed by these incredible youngsters from various schools in your community.

Flash forward a few years later and I spoke to Tatiana Nyamusa, Kenneth Nyamusa Junior's super supportive mom. She contacted me to findout information to help get her son's first book published. Junior was now a teenager, and I was thrilled to not only see his manuscript, but to help him get it published. I was amazed that this super teen had written a book since the last time I had seen him. Even though I hadn't read his manuscript yet, I knew it was going to be incredible, especially as he had impressed me with his mastery of words as an 11-year-old. Later that month, we got together at a local park, and I was truly amazed by his writing skills. As you can expect, the spelling was perfect and I couldn't wait to see his words come to life in his 1st book entitled, "Survival of the Fittest". This super teen had impressed me as a kid at a local Spelling Bee a few short years ago and now I was 1000000% certain that people around the globe would be buzzing about his incredible book. After several months of working together with Junior and his wonderful family; Ken(dad), Tatiana(mom) and his larger-than-life little sister, Njia....the book was published. Throughout his young author career, he has appeared on various podcasts, CBC Radio One, CBC -The National and CTV London. As the legend of Kenneth Nyamusa Junior continues to soar to new heights, this is just the beginning for this incredibly amazing super teen.
